Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that lowers LDL cholesterol to reduce cardiovascular risk. As Lipitor it was once the best-selling drug in the world; since U.S. generic entry in 2011 it has become a fully commoditized multi-source generic, and it remains one of the most-prescribed medicines in the country. Typical generic tablets now cost pharmacies only a few cents each at NADAC, a more than 99% decline from brand-era pricing.
